Reports say Biden administration will impose additional tariffs on China

According to foreign media reports on the 10th, the Biden administration will announce a tariff measure targeting China's strategic industries next week, including electric vehicles, batteries, and solar equipment.

According to Reuters and Bloomberg, US President Joe Biden will announce new tariffs on China against strategic industries as early as next week, according to a person familiar with the matter. The full announcement may be announced as early as next Tuesday (14th) Eastern Time, and it is expected to largely maintain the existing taxation. And the possibility of the announcement being delayed is not ruled out. The person added that details about the specific amount or category of tariffs to be imposed are unclear, but the government is said to have focused on areas of interest within the fields of strategic competition and national security. International Electronic Commerce learned that as the November election approaches, Biden has begun to campaign for the election since the end of last year, and the imposition of tariffs is also seen by him as a powerful "vote-pulling" tool. Last month, he called on the United States to significantly increase tariffs on Chinese metal products. As is well known in the industry, during Trump's administration, he repeatedly used the name of "national security" to practice unilateralism and protectionism, and imposed tariffs on Chinese imports in 2018 and 2019 by citing "Section 301". After the current US President Biden came to power, although he repeatedly claimed to "consider reducing tariffs on China", he has been slow to take substantive action and still insisted on most of the tariffs during the Trump era.

In 2022, Biden launched a review of Trump-era policies in accordance with Section 301 of the US Trade Act. The new decision is the final result of the so-called "Section 301" tariff review first implemented by Trump.

The White House did not comment, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative did not comment.

In fact, China has responded to the issue of the US imposing tariffs on China more than once.

Mao Ning of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously responded to relevant issues that the essence of Sino-US economic and trade cooperation is mutual benefit and win-win, and there are no winners in trade wars and tariff wars. Artificial restrictions or protectionism will only interfere with normal trade exchanges and the stability of the supply chain, which is not in the interests of any party. The United States should earnestly respect the principles of market economy and international trade rules, and create a good environment for Sino-US economic and trade cooperation, rather than the opposite.
