At Computex 2024, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon confirmed that the company will return to the server chip market, which is the first positive response to previous rumors that Qualcomm intends to re-enter the field.

Qualcomm's return will use the core technology developed by its subsidiary Nuvia in order to launch solutions based on the Snapdragon processor platform in the data center and automotive fields.

In the interview, Amon emphasized Qualcomm's leading position in the smartphone market and pointed out that the company's technological innovations in CPU, GPU, NPU, etc. will also apply to the PC and server markets.

He mentioned that as the PC market ushered in a new replacement cycle and the development of generative AI technology, Qualcomm saw the importance of enhancing battery life while improving device performance.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite platform has shown outstanding performance in both performance and energy efficiency. Its performance in the Geekbench single-threaded test surpassed that of AMD and Intel's competitors, while power consumption was reduced by 65%. AI PC products equipped with this platform can last up to 30 hours, far exceeding existing products.

Amon said Qualcomm respects its competitors and does not take success for granted. He believes that Qualcomm's successful experience in the smartphone market will help the company develop in the server chip market.

In addition, he also revealed Qualcomm's future layout in the fields of data centers, automobiles and mobile devices, and it is expected that the Nuvia architecture will play an important role in these fields.

Qualcomm launched the Arm server chip Centriq2400 in 2017, but later withdrew from the field due to market and company strategy adjustments.

Today, as the share of Arm architecture in the server market gradually increases, Qualcomm sees new opportunities to return to the market and use Nuvia technology to gain a competitive advantage.
