AMD recently announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Silo AI, Europe's largest private AI lab, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $665 million. AMD sees this as another important step in its strategy to provide end-to-end AI solutions based on open standards and in close partnership with the global AI ecosystem.
According to reports, the Silo AI team is composed of world-class AI scientists and engineers with extensive experience in developing tailored AI models, platforms and solutions for leading companies in the cloud, embedded and terminal computing markets.
Headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, with operations in Europe and North America, Silo AI focuses on end-to-end AI-driven solutions to help customers quickly and easily integrate AI into products, services and operations. Their work involves different markets, and customers include Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce and Unilever. In addition to the SiloGen model platform, Silo AI has also created the most advanced open source multi-language LLMs on AMD platforms, such as Poro and Viking.
After the acquisition, Silo AI CEO and co-founder Peter Sarlin will continue to lead the Silo AI team as part of AMD's Artificial Intelligence Group and report to AMD Senior Vice President Vamsi Boppana. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2024.
"In every industry, companies are looking for fast and effective ways to develop and deploy AI solutions to meet their unique business needs," said Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD's Artificial Intelligence Group. "Silo AI has a trusted team of AI experts and extensive experience in developing leading AI models and solutions, including advanced LLMs built on AMD platforms, which will further accelerate our AI strategy and drive the building and rapid implementation of AI solutions for our global customers."
"Silo AI's mission is to build an AI flagship company. Today's announcement is the logical next step for us to join forces with AMD to shape the future of AI computing," said Peter Sarlin, CEO and co-founder of Silo AI. "We have a long history of building successful AI products and delivering value to customers. We look forward to becoming part of AMD to further expand our influence and develop enterprise solutions and AI models to address the complex challenges of deploying AI at scale today."
It is worth mentioning that Silo AI is the latest in a series of acquisitions and corporate investments made by AMD to support its AI strategy. In the past 12 months, AMD has invested more than $125 million in more than a dozen AI companies and acquired Mipsology and Nod.ai to expand the AMD AI ecosystem, support partners, and enhance AMD's computing platform leadership.
