TSMC's earnings growth is strong - DRAM price increase facing rejected

TSMC's revenue increased by 40% year-on-year, with advanced process revenue accounting for 67%.


01 TSMC's revenue report

TSMC announced its financial report for the second quarter of 2024, with consolidated revenue of approximately NT$673.51 billion, net profit of approximately NT$247.85 billion, and earnings per share of NT$9.56. Compared with the same period last year, revenue in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 40.1%, and net profit after tax and earnings per share both increased by 36.3%. Compared with the previous quarter, revenue in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 13.6%, and net profit after tax increased by 9.9%. The gross profit margin was 53.2%, the operating profit margin was 42.5%, and the net profit after tax margin was 36.8%.

3nm process shipments accounted for 15% of TSMC's wafer sales in the second quarter of 2024, 5nm process shipments accounted for 35% of the full-quarter wafer sales, and 7nm process shipments accounted for 17% of the full-quarter wafer sales. Overall, revenue from advanced processes (including 7nm and more advanced processes) reached 67% of the full-quarter wafer sales.


02 Customers said about the price raising

Rumor has it that customers are resisting price increases, and DRAM price increases have stopped.

According to the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily, citing the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the price increase of DRAM used in mobile phones, PCs, and data center servers has stopped. In June, the wholesale price (bulk transaction price) of the indicative product DDR4 8Gb was about US$2.10 per unit, and the price of the smaller 4Gb product was about US$1.62 per unit, both of which were the same as last month, and it was the third time in four months that it remained the same.

DRAM wholesale prices are finalized monthly or quarterly between memory manufacturers and customers. The reason why DRAM wholesale prices have not risen is mainly because the DRAM spot price, which reflects the current supply and demand, has continued to remain flat, and customers have resisted the strong price increase attitude of memory manufacturers. Spot transactions are sensitive to current supply and demand. Although they account for a small proportion of the global market, they are reference data for determining wholesale prices.


03 New module from Texas Instruments (TI)

Texas Instruments launches multiple power modules, the smallest in the industry.

Texas Instruments (TI) has announced six new power modules designed to increase power density, improve efficiency and reduce electromagnetic interference. These power modules utilize TI's proprietary MagPack integrated magnetic packaging technology, which is 23% smaller than competing modules, enabling designers of industrial, enterprise and communications applications to achieve performance levels that were previously impossible.

Three of the six new devices, the TPSM82866A, TPSM82866C and TPSM82816, are the industry's smallest 6A power modules, providing industry-leading power density of nearly 1A per 1 square millimeter. The remaining three models are TPSM828303, TPSM82813 and TPSM81033.
