According to foreign media reports, the Brazilian government announced an AI investment plan of over US$4 billion on the 30th.
On Tuesday (30th), Brazilian time, at the opening ceremony of the 5th National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation held in Brasilia, the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation submitted the country's first artificial intelligence investment plan (PBIA) to President Lula. The planned investment scale is approximately 23 billion reais (approximately US$4.07 billion), which is planned to be implemented gradually from 2024 to 2028.
The plan is based on the results and suggestions of discussions held by Brazilian representatives at more than 200 municipal and state meetings, covering the "Brazilian Scientific Computing Laboratory Supercomputer" project investment, as well as infrastructure construction, urban public services and business innovation related to the application of artificial intelligence. Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America. The PBIA plan announced this time aims to achieve technological autonomy and competitiveness in the field of AI and no longer rely too much on AI tools imported from other countries. Brazil's proposed investment plan is expected to provide resources for "direct impact initiatives" in areas such as public health, agriculture, environment, business and education. Government reports show that many of these initiatives include the development of AI systems to facilitate customer service and other operating procedures. According to the Brazilian government, the PBIA plan will be allocated over the next four years. Among them, nearly 14 billion reais will be used for business innovation projects, while more than 5 billion reais will be invested in AI infrastructure and development. The remaining resources are expected to be used for training programs, public service improvements and AI regulatory support measures, as well as so-called "direct impact initiatives." "Instead of waiting for AI from China, the United States, South Korea, and Japan, why not have our own AI?" Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said as he presented the investment plan.
"Our AI needs to be intelligent, it needs to be a source of income and jobs," the leader added.
