The union represents more than 30,000 Samsung employees in South Korea, accounting for about 24% of Samsung's total Korean employees. According to Lee Hyun-kuk, vice chairman of NSEU, the core goal of this strike strategy is to directly impact the company's economic interests.
The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), the largest union of Samsung Electronics in South Korea, has announced that it will start a four-day strike action starting on Thursday, August 15, 2024. The purpose of this strike is to put pressure on Samsung Electronics management to provide higher wages and better benefits.
The strike plan was proposed after negotiations between the union and the company's management failed to reach an agreement. The union represents more than 30,000 Samsung employees in South Korea, accounting for about 24% of Samsung's total number of employees in South Korea. According to Lee Hyun-kuk, vice chairman of NSEU, the core goal of this strike strategy is to directly impact the company's economic interests.
Samsung responded immediately, saying in a statement: "We will ensure that production activities are not affected by the strike and strictly implement the policy of 'no work, no pay'. At the same time, we promise to continue to try to restart the dialogue with the union."
The strike coincides with Korea's National Day on August 15. Union members will refuse to work overtime on this day, and then take various forms of strikes, including deformed shifts, four groups of three shifts and flexible working hours.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time that NSEU has taken strike measures. The union started the strike on July 8 and upgraded it to an indefinite strike on July 10. Until early August, after negotiations with management reached a deadlock, the union called on members to temporarily return to work. At the end of the previous strike, NSEU said: "In order to reduce the economic pressure on union members while maintaining pressure on management, we will adjust the struggle strategy. In view of the fact that the negotiations failed to reach an agreement, the strike has entered a long-term stage. We will advance through surprise strikes and compliance measures to ensure that our efforts can bear fruit."
