BYD will start its overseas strategy of new energy passenger vehicles in 2021.
Recently, it was reported that BYD intends to acquire Chrysler, the third largest automobile company in the United States, including all assets of Chrysler's three major brands and eight factories in the United States. If the acquisition is successful, Chrysler will serve as BYD's brand springboard to enter the United States.
In response, on August 16, Li Yunfei, general manager of BYD's brand and public relations department, responded on his personal social account that the news was "false information."
According to public information, BYD was founded in February 1995 and is headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. Its business spans four major industries: automobiles, rail transit, new energy and electronics. It is listed in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, with revenue and market value exceeding 100 billion yuan. In 2020, BYD became a car company listed in the 2020 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands, and has been the champion of the most valuable Chinese brand in the automotive industry for 6 consecutive years.
It is reported that BYD started its new energy passenger car overseas strategy in 2021. The 2023 annual report shows that BYD's overseas revenue in 2023 accounted for 26.60% of its total operating revenue, a year-on-year increase of 75.20%; in the first half of 2024, BYD's overseas sales reached 203,400 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 151%.
Another protagonist of this incident, Chrysler, is a well-known American automobile company and one of the three largest automobile companies in the United States. It is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It was founded by Walter Chrysler in 1925 and is now a US subsidiary of the Dutch automobile company Stellantis. It has three well-known brands: Dodge, Chrysler and JEEP. The company has 8 automobile factories in the United States.
Chrysler has changed hands several times before. In 2009, Italian automaker Fiat acquired Chrysler, which had just emerged from bankruptcy; in 2014, in order to follow the naming rules of its parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Chrysler Group announced that it would change its company name to FCA USA LLC. In 2021, FCA merged with PSA Group, the parent company of Peugeot Citroen, to form a new group, Stellantis, and became the world's fourth largest automaker.
