Texas Instruments has laid off its China MCU team (the market and applications have been retained, and RD has been abandoned), and has moved all its original MCU product lines to India.

It is said that all team members are currently dispersed and arranged to other product lines, and nominal positions and salaries remain unchanged.

The company gives employees two choices: either accept the arrangement to work in other product lines, or resign on their own initiative. This move is actually quite deliberate, indicating that the company has no intention of going through the layoff process and will not provide any compensation to employees who voluntarily leave.

According to reports, TI's MCU R&D team in China is mainly focused on the MSP430 product line, and the MSP430 series is a series of 16-bit ultra-low power consumption, low-cost MCUs that TI has introduced to the market since 1996. Now some of the team members have been laid off, and some have been merged into the LED DRIVER chip team. Now the domestic MCU circle has begun to "grab people" crazily.

Fang Jing, chief analyst of electronics at Minsheng Securities, said that TI's MCU team used to be one of the best product lines for local operations. It was based on the Chinese market and specialized in local customized development. Customer response was very fast. However, it began to decline in early 2018. The market was slowly taken over by emerging domestic MCU manufacturers, and the living space was squeezed. "This team is mainly based in Shanghai. It was even more difficult to operate during the epidemic, so we simply withdrew."

He believes that although some employees can choose to transfer to other teams, the span from digital to analog is relatively large, so "it is more of a stopgap measure for TI, which does not want to pay layoff compensation." "The rise of domestic MCUs is accelerating, and overseas leaders are feeling more pressure. . This comprehensive abolition is believed to further promote the substitution of domestic MCUs."

Data shows that Texas Instruments' general MCU market share in 2020 is about 7%, which is far less than the top five Renesas Electronics, NXP, Infineon, STMicroelectronics, Microchip Technology, etc. In recent years, domestic MCU manufacturers have Progress in this field is rapid.
