International Electronics Business News, according to multiple sources of information, Apple has notified component suppliers that it prefers to purchase iPhone 16 batteries from Indian factories.
Apple has increasingly focused its device manufacturing in India after relying primarily on China for most of the past decade to produce its devices. Over the past year, India has only allowed Apple's Chinese component suppliers to do business after finding a local joint venture partner.
Three people familiar with the matter said that battery manufacturers such as China's Desai were encouraged to build new factories in India, while Xinpu Technology was asked to expand production scale in India to cope with future orders.
"If all goes well with the iPhone 16 battery supply, Apple plans to shift more iPhone battery production to India". said a person close to the company.
Separately, India's Deputy Minister of Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, said on the X platform this week that Apple's Japanese supplier TDK is setting up a manufacturing plant in the northern Indian state of Haryana to produce batteries for iPhones made in India.
TDK said it "has begun construction of a factory in India for partial battery production" and plans to start construction in 2025.
It is understood that companies such as Desai and Simpu package cells produced by TDK and its peers into modules and then send them to assemblers such as Foxconn.
A recent announcement from Foxconn, Apple's largest supplier, said the company plans to invest more than $1.5 billion in new production facilities in India.
Being able to set up factories in India earlier is "an advantage" for battery manufacturers. Also supplying batteries to Apple is Sunwanda, a Shenzhen-based battery maker listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, which operates a factory near Delhi that was established before the government imposed restrictions on Chinese investment.
Apple's sales in India have grown significantly in recent years. With India becoming Apple's next key market after China, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that 12% to 14% of global iPhone shipments are made in India, with this proportion increasing to 20% to 25% by 2024. %. Trial production of the standard iPhone 17 will begin in India in the second half of 2020. Kuo said 2025 marks the first time Apple will start developing new iPhones outside of China.
