According to media reports in Arizona, the United States, at 2:45 pm local time on the 15th, an explosion occurred at TSMC's Arizona factory and a worker was sent to hospital.
The report quoted the Phoenix Fire Department as saying that three local fire brigades were dispatched to TSMC's Fab21 plant near Dove Valley and 43rd Avenue at 2:30 pm.
In response, TSMC issued a statement confirming that an accident occurred at the construction site of its Arizona factory in the United States. The cause of the accident was an abnormality in the outsourced waste sulfuric acid removal tanker entering the site. An outsourcer's removal driver had an accident while inspecting the waste sulfuric acid and was subsequently sent to a local hospital.
TSMC said there was no damage to factory facilities and no injuries were reported by TSMC employees and on-site construction workers.
It is well known in the industry that the Biden administration has been committed to enhancing the United States' domestic semiconductor production capabilities to improve the United States' competitiveness in the global market. TSMC is one of the main beneficiaries of the Biden administration's CHIP Act, receiving billions of dollars in funding from the U.S. government in exchange for bringing semiconductor manufacturing to American soil.
In May 2020, TSMC stated that it would invest US$12 billion in Phoenix, USA, to build an advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant. In December 2022, the company announced plans to build a second wafer fab in the region, increasing total investment to $40 billion.
