Today, IBM China confirmed to the media that IBM will completely close its R&D departments in China, including IBM China Development Center (CDL) and IBM China Systems Center (CSL), involving more than 1,000 employees. IBM will provide N+3 compensation.
Another employee revealed that all employees were called to the office today and only held a three-minute meeting to inform them of the layoffs.
IBM officials responded that this was to adjust operations as needed to provide the best service to customers, and emphasized that these changes would not affect its ability to provide support to customers in Greater China.
It is worth noting that IBM's current CEO Arvind Krishna is an Indian who carried out multiple rounds of layoffs around the world shortly after taking office in 2020.
In 2021, IBM suddenly announced the closure of IBM China Research Institute (IBM CRL), which has a history of more than 25 years. Many of IBM's well-known scientific and technological achievements come from this department, including the famous artificial intelligence program "Watson".
In addition, there are reports that the IBM layoffs can be relocated to Bangalore, India. According to job information on recruitment websites, IBM is indeed increasing jobs in India, which is in line with the "cost reduction" strategy of American companies to move jobs to India and Europe.
