OPPO restarts chip design?

Recently, there is news that OPPO may restart its "chip design" business and has begun recruiting former Zheku Technology employees to return. Previously, many companies in the semiconductor chip industry have recruited Zheku Technology employees. In response, OPPO said in response to this matter that it "has no comment on this."

On May 12 this year, OPPO officially stated that in the face of uncertainty in the global economy and mobile phone market, after careful consideration, the company decided to completely terminate the business of its chip design company ZEKU Technology (ZEKU).

At that time, OPPO's overall move to abolish ZEKU's business was very sudden. Even the middle and senior managers within ZEKU expressed ignorance about this. It is said that there are more than 2,000 employees affected by the dissolution of ZEKU, and OPPO has given these employees a high N+3 severance allowance.

It is understood that ZEKU was established in 2019 and covers product lines including: core application processors, short-range communications, 5G Modem, radio frequency, ISP and power management chips. Two audio and video ISPs, MariSilicon X and Y, have been successfully launched before; MariSilicon X is OPPO’s first self-designed and self-developed video-specific NPU chip. MariSilicon Y is OPPO’s second self-developed chip and is a flagship Bluetooth audio SoC chip. Just last week, there were rumors in the industry that ZEKU would tape out 4nm Soc in the third quarter.

Before the termination of business, Zheku had more than 3,000 employees, including 2,500 domestic employees. Based on the number of employees, it was already a top-level chip design company in China. In the four years since its establishment, many talents from well-known chip design companies such as Zhanrui, HiSilicon, and Qualcomm have joined Zheku.
