AMD's latest quarterly numbers show strong momentum in the desktop, mobile and server markets. The numbers, revealed in a new report from Mercury Research, show that the company is steadily eating into Intel's market share.

Starting with the desktop market, AMD's consumer x86 CPUs now account for 28.7% of shipments, compared to just 19.2% in 2023. Last quarter it was 23%, so this latest growth is pretty impressive. AMD's revamped Ryzen portfolio, which covers the value of the enthusiast segment, seems to be paying off.

The 3D V-Cache-equipped Ryzen X3D parts are particularly popular among gamers and power users. With the recent launch of the Ryzen 9000 series and the flagship 9800X3D, AMD looks ready to continue to take on Intel in the DIY desktop space. The Ryzen 9000 series failed to live up to AMD's claimed numbers at launch, leading to disappointed buyers, but the company has now redeemed itself with the 9800X3D, which we called the "new gaming CPU king" in our review.

As for mobile, AMD is on pace to have 22.3% market share and 19.2% revenue share in Q3 2024, up from 20.3% and 17.7% in the previous quarter. The Ryzen AI 300 series APUs are expected to hit the sweet spot with their combination of performance and AI capabilities. More mainstream and high-end Ryzen AI mobile products are expected to debut at CES 2025, giving the company another shot in the arm in its battle against Intel and Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.

Speaking of Intel, the company is going through serious turmoil, with massive layoffs and bleak forecasts quarter after quarter. The grand plans for U.S. chip factories funded by the CHIPS Act also appear to be in disarray. This should mean bigger gains for AMD going forward — with Qualcomm's tiny share of the x86 processor market, any sales and market share gains AMD achieves are essentially at the expense of Intel’s existing dominance.

Moving on to the server CPU market, AMD's share climbed from 23.3% a year ago to 24.2% in the third quarter of 2024. Even more impressive, revenue share soared to 33.9%, compared to 31.2% in the third quarter of 2023. Last month, AMD also launched its EPYC 9005 "Torino" processor based on the Zen 5 architecture, so you can expect these numbers to soar even further.

AMD surpasses Intel in data center revenue for the first time

AMD reportedly outsold Intel in data center processor sales this quarter, marking a major win for the company's EPYC processor line. AMD's data center revenue in the third quarter of 2024 was $3.5 billion, compared with Intel's $3.3 billion. By comparison, Intel previously generated about $5-6 billion in annual revenue in this area before facing increasing competition.

AMD's sales growth in the data center market is tied to growing demand for efficient and affordable processors, which are critical to strengthening data center networks. Intel's Xeon processors have long dominated the server environment, but AMD's EPYC chips are highly favored for their lower prices and superior efficiency.

Additionally, AMD's Ryzen product line continues to improve with a focus on gaming. Launched on November 7, the new Zen 5-based Ryzen 9800X3D CPU shows higher performance than its predecessor in both productivity and gaming tasks. Preliminary benchmarks show an 8% improvement in gaming performance compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, along with significant improvements in productivity applications, giving AMD the upper hand in several areas.

As data centers continue to expand around the world and consumers increasingly demand high-performance, cost-effective processors, AMD appears poised to continue eating into Intel's market share and challenge Intel's long-term dominance in the market.
