According to data from Jon Peddie Research, graphics processor shipments increased both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter in the third quarter. However, sales of integrated GPUs increased both sequentially and year-on-year due to growth in the processor market, while the supply of discrete GPUs decreased as AMD and Nvidia were preparing new products.

According to JPR, the market shipped a total of 73.6 million iGPUs and dGPUs during the quarter. GPU shipments grew 3.4% from the previous quarter and 2.4% year-over-year. Laptop GPUs grew significantly by 5.9%, while desktop graphics cards fell by 5.6%. The industry also supplied 66.5 million PC CPUs (almost all with integrated graphics), so processor shipments grew 12% quarter-over-quarter and 7.8% year-over-year. AMD outperformed its rival Intel, with CPU shipments growing 15% while Intel's fell 12%, Mercury Research reported last month.

In graphics cards, Intel dominated with a 65% share, followed by Nvidia with 18% and AMD with 17%. However, AMD's GPU market share grew 0.8% from the previous quarter, Intel's share grew 1.1%, and Nvidia's share fell 1.9%.

About Discrete GPU

Speaking of discrete GPUs, sales of discrete graphics processors for desktops and laptops totaled 7.1 million units, significantly lower than shipments in the third quarters of 2022 and 2023. This decline explains Nvidia's decline in market share.

PC manufacturers and retailers usually buy discrete graphics cards and processors in the third quarter to prepare for the holiday season. However, this year does not seem to be the case, perhaps because AMD's Radeon RX 7000 and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 40 series are reaching the end of their life cycles, and people who wanted to buy these graphics cards may have already bought them by now. In addition, now that AMD's next-generation Radeon RX 8000 and Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 series are about to hit the market, it is unlikely that many people will be willing to buy the current generation products.

"The surge led to a surge in GPU and CPU shipments overall in the third quarter," said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research. "AMD and Intel released new CPUs, which unleashed some demand for them. However, looking ahead, we believe that if the proposed tariffs are implemented, the PC market will fall into recession due to rising prices and mismatched revenue growth."
